Measuring surface activity of nanoparticles:

Why and How?


Abstract: Dr. Bello’s talk will focus on the pitfalls of current nanoparticle exposure metrics for personal exposure monitoring for hazard control and health effects studies. The focus of his analysis will be on real-world exposure scenarios and their characteristics. Through examples from his own research experience and literature review, he will emphasize the critical and, at present, unmet need for more selectivity in the chemical characterization of airborne nano aerosols. Of particular interest to his research is the concept of dose that integrates surface area and surface activity. Different approaches that have been used to characterize surface activity offline will be reviewed and compared. He will present recent data comparing the Ferric Reducing Ability of Serum Assay (FRAS) against dichlorofluorescin (DCFH) assay, and electron spin resonance (ESR) for diverse engineered nanomaterial (ENM) classes, and further present within- and between-class variation in surface activity for a broad class of ENM as evidence of the utility of this concept. Validation of FRAS against in vitro inflammatory responses (such as cytokines), and other cytotoxicity endpoints, and in vivo against BAL inflammation, will also be presented. Dr. Bello will conclude his talk with a summary of performance requirements and constraints that need to be taken into consideration for a workable personal monitor for surface activity x surface area measurements.

 Biosketch: Dr. Bello is an Associate Professor of exposure biology in the Department of Work Environment at UMass Lowell, and a visiting scientist at the Harvard School of Public Health. His primary research interests are in investigating relationships between workplace exposures and disease in humans, utilizing interdisciplinary approaches and drawing expertise from diverse fields such as exposure sciences, mechanistic toxicology and molecular biology.
He has published over 42 peer-reviewed publications and three book chapters on themes related to quantitative exposure assessment for epidemiology and hazard control, identification and mitigation of new hazards, and their toxicological characterization. Dr. Bello is serving as an associate editor for the journal of nanotoxicology and the annals of occupational hygiene. He has been a keynote speaker at several international conferences on the science of exposure assessment (X2012), nanotoxicology (2012), occupational and environmental exposure of skin to chemicals (2009, 2011), and isocyanates: past, present, and future (2013). His current research involves evaluating utility of oxidative stress screening for and measuring surface activity of engineered nanomaterials; developing new methods for reactive nanoparticles, chemical and toxicological characterization of nanoparticle emissions during the life cycle of nano-enabled products, such as from printers and copiers and CNT-composites, and dermal exposure to nanoparticles and skin disease.
