Heteroatom-containing aromatic compounds: a journey through luminescent molecules
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a large class of compounds that still attract tremendous attention.[1] Due to their functional properties (luminescence, redox behaviour, electrical conductivity, etc.) they currently find a wide range of applications, for example in organic electronics, photovoltaics, biomedical sensors and light-harvesting materials. The presence of heteroatoms in the molecular skeleton can deeply affect these features, making these compounds of large interest for photophysical and electrochemical investigations.[2] Moreover, since the functionalities can be tuned very flexibly, these heteroatom-containing molecules can potentially provide improved performances in a number of applications, such as phosphorescent emitters,[3a] luminescent sensors,[3b] organic low band gap materials and photoinitiators.[3c]
