TOPOLOGICAL INSULATORS AND A NEW TYPE OF ORDER: OPPORTUNITIES IN PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY AND MATERIALS SCIENCE

 Abstract

More than 30 years ago, the discovery of the exact quantization of the Hall conductance under extreme conditions of low temperatures and high magnetic fields opened the doors for the study of a new type of order [1]. Twenty seven years later, similar physics was spotted in exotic materials without the need for an external magnetic field [2]. This discovery marked the birth of the so called Topological Insulators [2], materials which in spite of having an insulating bulk bear conducting edge/surface states with outstanding robustness.

 In this talk I will give a brief and general overview on these materials: What are they, why are they interesting and how could we use them. Opportunities in fields beyond physics (e.g. Chemistry, Materials Science) will be highlighted. I will also comment on new directions aiming at achieving similar properties in any material through laser illumination [3-4].
