Nanostructured catalysts for environment protection and hydrogen production

The growth of human population, the increase of the quality of life in developed countries and the extensive use of fossil fuels resulted in the release of large quantities of pollutant compounds in the environment, affecting the quality of air, water and soils. In the last decades, a growing attention has been devoted to the development of processes to reduce the pollutant emissions from energy production plants, transportation vehicles, chemical industries etc. A key point in the abatement of pollutant substances is the development of efficient catalysts able to prevent their emission or to remove them from polluted environments. In this context, the control of active phase in the nanometric range allows the design and synthesis of heterogeneous catalysts with exceptional activity and stability.

In this talk, I will summarize the major results obtained in my research work on the design and development of nanostructured heterogeneous catalysts to be employed in environment protection processes and in sustainable production of hydrogen and fuels. Various examples will be presented, including the removal of methane from exhaust streams, the purification of polluted water by advanced photocatalytic oxidation processes and the sustainable hydrogen production from second-generation biomasses, employing both thermal or photocatalytic processes.
