Research at Department for Materials Synthesis, Jožef Stefan Institute:

Synthesis of magnetic and multifunctional nanocomposites

In the seminar, current research at the Department of Material Synthesis, Jožef Stefan Institute, will be briefly reviewed with special focus on the materials containing magnetic nanoparticles. The presentation will cover synthesis, functionalization, and characterization of the nanoparticles, preparation of stable colloidal suspensions, and assembling of the nanoparticles into nanocomposites. The nanocomposites are multicomponent solid materials where at least one of the phases has at least one of its dimensions in the nano range. Because of this nanostructure, these materials frequently display unique properties. Such nanocomposites can be synthesised in different forms, i.e., bulk, films or (nano)particles, using the colloidal processing of nanoparticles in suspensions. First, the basic principles of the synthesis will be presented, followed by some practical examples of the synthesis of magnetic and multifunctional composite nanoparticles, mainly those combining magnetic nanoparticles with nanoparticles or layers of other functional materials. The synthesis of bulk nanocomposites will also be presented with a focus on nanocomposites containing a high concentration of (magnetic) nanoparticles dispersed in a polymer matrix.

Prof. dr. Darko Makovec is full professor, head of Department for Materials Synthesis at Jožef Stefan Institute, and scientific chancellor. He has defended his PhD at the University of Ljubljana in year 1995. In 2001-2002 he worked as a Fulbright scholar at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. His scientific career is focused in synthesis and characterization of the inorganic and hybrid materials. Prof Makovec has published over 150 peer-review articles and he kept many invited lectures and other form of presentations at domestic and international scientific meetings. Prof Makovec has also leaded numerous applied projects in cooperation with Slovenian industry and is (co)author of many patents and patent applications.
